Pocket watch stands, also known as watch holders or hutches, became popular in the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries as a way to safely store and display pocket watches, particularly at night. They evolved from simple wooden or fabric-lined boxes to more elaborate, decorative pieces crafted from various materials like porcelain, metal, and bone. These stands not only served as a secure place for the watch but also transformed it into a bedside or mantel clock, making them functional and fashionable accessories.
This primitive example has been formed from lead and cast into a gothic lancet window with some decorative fretwork too. It bears no foundry or makers mark. The stand is supported overall on a wooden plinth base verso.
This is an unusual but decorative item.
