A small tripod cooking vessel of Dutch Low Countries greyware, a grey-bodied lead-glazed earthenware tradition produced alongside the better-known red-firing wares of the region, and traded extensively across the North Sea into England and beyond.

Globular and ribbed, rising to an everted rim, fitted with two pulled strap handles from shoulder to rim, and standing on three pinched, tapering legs that let the pot sit directly among the embers of an open hearth. Covered overall in a rich amber-olive lead glaze with darker manganese-brown mottling, pooling attractively around the girth cordon and handles, the pale grey body visible at an old repair. This distinctive hearth-cooking form — known in Dutch as a grape, and in the English trade as a pipkin — was the workhorse vessel of the peasant kitchen, used for the long, slow simmering of pottage and one-pot stews.

Provenance: Holland. 16th Century.

Material: Earthenware with lead-glaze.

Condition: Old restoration to the base and legs, with associated fills to the lower body as illustrated; a small chip to the rim and surface wear with glaze losses to one side; an inventory number to the underside suggesting a former collection. A characterful and genuinely used example of Low Countries domestic pottery, honestly worn as befits a piece made for the hearth rather than the table.

Dimensions: Height: 5½ inches (14cm)
