A Medieval Antique Carved Stone Grotesque Head, Likely a Label Stop or Corbel

A wonderfully evocative survival from the great age of English church building: a medieval carved stone head of grotesque form, most likely a label stop or corbel from an ecclesiastical building, weathered over many centuries into something approaching pure sculpture.

What is the difference between a label stop and a corbel?

A label stop is the carved terminal at the end of a hood mould — the projecting band of stone (also called a label or dripstone) that runs over the top of a medieval doorway, window, or arch to throw rainwater clear of the opening. The moulding follows the curve of the arch and then finishes at each side, just where it dies into the wall at the springing line, and rather than simply cutting it off square, masons typically ended it with a decorative stop: a carved head, a foliate boss, a beast, or a plain angled block.

Heads were far and away the favourite treatment in English parish work — kings and queens, bishops, ladies in wimples, grinning grotesques, green men. They come in facing pairs, one each side of the window or door, and because they sit at roughly eye level or just above, they were carved with more care and personality than much higher-up work. It's often suggested that masons used local faces, patrons, or each other as models, which is part of their charm.

The distinction from a corbel is functional: a corbel projects from a wall to support something — a roof timber, a vault shaft, a parapet — and carries structural load, whereas a label stop is purely a decorative termination carrying nothing. In practice, once a weathered head is detached from its building, the two can be hard to tell apart. A label stop tends to be smaller, flatter-backed, and carved for viewing from below and slightly to one side; a corbel head usually has more depth and a substantial block behind it.

The carving retains its essential physiognomy despite the softening hand of time — deeply hollowed eye sockets beneath a heavy brow, the remains of a broad nose, and a gaping mouth still showing distinct tooth-like projections, characteristics typical of the grotesque and beast heads with which medieval masons animated the exteriors of parish churches, dripstones, and doorway hoods. Whether conceived as a guardian, a warning, or a simple flight of a carver's imagination, it carries the unmistakable presence of the medieval mind.

Equally at home displayed on a plinth indoors as a piece of medieval sculpture, or returned to the garden where its lichened surface will continue to mature.

Condition: The stone is enveloped in a superb crust of grey-green lichen and weathered patination, evidence of centuries in the open air, and now lends the head immense decorative character. Erosion is consistent throughout and entirely stable, with no fresh damage.
