An honest and appealing Welsh hanging corner cupboard of the later eighteenth century, in oak with a deep, mellow colour and the unpretentious solidity of good country joinery.
A boldly moulded, stepped cornice crowns the canted case, which is finished below with a moulded base. The single door is framed around two panels: a modest piece of country elegance that lifts the cupboard above the purely workaday. An iron rim lock behind a brass escutcheon secures the door.
Inside, the cupboard bears its original stain. Two shelves with gently undulating, serpentine-shaped fronts divide it into three tiers. The reverse of the door panel bears a lattice of old scratches and scribed marks, the accumulated traces of generations of household use. In a Welsh farmhouse such a cupboard would have hung in the angle of the kitchen or parlour, keeping the family’s best china, tea and small valuables under lock and key.
Provenance: Wales. Late 18th-century.
Material: Oak, brass and iron.
Condition: Original, in good, sound condition commensurate with age and domestic use. Expect marks, knocks, shrinkage, and wear to the edges and mouldings, plus old scratching on the reverse of the door. The exterior has a rich, deep patina. It is ready to hang.
