A Late 18th Century Carved Oak Folk Art Head, English, Circa 1780-1800

A wonderfully characterful piece of English vernacular sculpture, this late eighteenth-century carved oak head depicts a grinning male figure wearing a flat-topped cap or hat, his broad face animated by a wide, toothy smile, prominent rounded cheeks, a strong nose, and deeply carved almond eyes retaining traces of lighter pigment to the irises. The whole is boldly worked with the adze and gouge in the unselfconscious manner of the country carver, the tool marks left proud across every surface and now burnished by two centuries of handling and wax.

The head retains substantial traces of its original decorated surface, with warm red-orange tones from the timber underneath, showing through the later darkened patination across the lips, cheeks, nose, and cap — a most attractive survival that lends the face considerable warmth and animation. One ear is pierced through, a charming detail, and the mouth is carved open to reveal an individually delineated row of teeth.

The sawn top and truncated neck indicate that the head was originally the terminal of a larger element — most probably a bracket, or similar architectural or furniture component — from which it was sympathetically removed in a past era. It now presents beautifully as a standalone sculptural object, fitted to the flat back with a later wire hanger for wall display, though it sits equally happily on a shelf or cabinet top.

In fine condition commensurate with age and origin: expected age splits and old losses to the sawn top edge, wear to the extremities, and a deep, glossy, untouched surface throughout. A genuinely engaging piece of English folk art with immense charm.
