A particularly handsome late 17th‑century English leather bombard, made as a jug for serving and pouring ale or other liquids in taverns, inns, and domestic settings. Constructed from thick, hand‑worked leather, stitched and pitch‑lined, these vessels were prized for their strength, insulation, and reliability at the table.

This example features a body of slight tapering form, characteristic of the period, all executed with a pleasing sense of proportion. The leather has developed a deep, glossy patina — that rich, treacly surface that only centuries of handling can produce. Subtle creases, surface movement, and visible stitching give the piece a tactile honesty and a sculptural presence.

Bombards of this type rarely survive in such condition, having been everyday working vessels rather than decorative objects. Today, they are highly sought after by collectors of early treen, tavernware, and English social history, offering a direct connection to the convivial world of 17th‑century alehouses.

A robust, atmospheric example with real period character.

Provenance: England. Late 17th Century.
