An evocative and deeply moving late 17th Century carved wood sculpture, depicting a powerful figure identified as Christ, absorbed in reading a sacred text. The figure, with his characteristic beard and long hair, is seated or kneeling, his gaze fixed upon the open book he holds. A small kneeling angel or putto attends him at his side, symbolizing the divine presence or inspiration inherent in the scripture.
This piece exemplifies the dramatic and spiritual intensity of the Baroque period of religious art. Traces of the original polychromy (painted finish) remain, showcasing the historic application of bold colours—notably the deep blue and ochre—on the figure's robes, providing a rich, textured surface history. The exposed wood grain and natural cracking speak to the age and authenticity of the carving, adding tremendous character.
The carving features heavy, expressive folds of drapery and a strong, emotive face, typical of Baroque ecclesiastical figures designed to inspire devotion.
