An early 17th-century Scicilian antique carved alabaster.
Attributed to the productive workshops of the city of Trapani, in western Sicily.
For around two hundred years from the late sixteenth century, alabaster sculptures were made in large numbers in these workshops, alongside carvings in coral, ivory, wood and other materials. Whilst the largest part of the production was small carvings of the votive figure known as the Madonna of Trapani, other religious figures were made, as well as mythological and allegorical subjects.
This sculpture of the female Saint is highly detailed, her head covered in a headpiece, dressed full length in robes, her arms overlapping one another and carrying a book, clasped tightly between her left arm and torso.
Presented on a primative wooden stand of much later date.
Provenance - Acquired from a German-based collection.
Condition - Please refer to the images. There is surface wear and evidence that the figure has been broken into two/three pieces and repaired historically. We feel that the wear and repairs add to the overall interest of the piece.
