Standing an impressive 15" (38 cm) tall, we offer for sale a pair of 17th-Century antique csrved oak corbels in the form of Satyrs / Faunus.
Satyrs or Faunus are half-man, half-animal creatures (usually part goat) and originate from Greek and Roman mythology. They are known for being wild, untamed, and associated with the god Dionysus, the god of wine and parties.
Flemish in origin and depicted in a crouching position, it is understood from the previous owner that these were once decorative supporters to the pediment of a period door frame, now long since lost.
Provenance - Ex-private collection in the Netherlands.
Condition - Please refer to the images. The timber has a wonderful age-related patination. There are minor surface cracks to the timber which have developed as the oak has seasoned. They figures display very well. A further detailed condition report is available upon request.
