A large 17thC Spanish antique carved wooden sculpture of God the Father also know as the Holy Trinity.
The most usual depiction of the Trinity in Renaissance art depicts God the Father as an old man, usually with a long beard and patriarchal in appearance, sometimes with a triangular halo (as a reference to the Trinity), or with a papal tiara, specially in Northern Renaissance painting.
This sculpture is carved in this manner with a Papal Crown, swathed in ecclesiastical robes, an orb in his left hand which represents the universe, his right arm raised and two fingers outstretched making a blessing to the world.
Christ stands by his feet and to his left foot is a cherub, representative of the Holy Spirit. Verso, he is depicted sitting in clouds.
Provenance: Sourced from a private collection based in Madrid, Spain.
Condition - Surface wear is commensurate with age as per the images. There is evidence of historic retouching to the polychrome in parts however the restoration is very sympathetic to the piece. A further detailed condition report is available upon request.
