A rare and highly decorative pair of early Jacobean carved oak panels, each worked in deep relief with a wyvern — the two-legged winged dragon of English heraldry — shown passant amid tufted grasses, its long serpentine tail curling upward. The creatures are carved with real vigour: scaled, hatched bodies with reeded mid-sections, feathered wings, open jaws, and boldly punched grounds giving excellent contrast to the polished relief.

Each wyvern is contained within a deep gadrooned oval cartouche, the spandrels carved with stylised flowerheads and foliage. The panels are mirrored, the beasts confronting one another when hung as a pair — almost certainly conceived together, and most likely originating from the frieze of a coffer, bedhead, or overmantel of the period.

The wyvern was among the most potent creatures in the Elizabethan and Jacobean visual imagination — a guardian beast drawn from heraldry and the medieval bestiary tradition, symbolising vigilance, strength, and protection against evil. It appears throughout the period on armorials, church woodwork, and domestic furniture, but surviving as a true confronting pair, with carving of this depth and quality, examples are decidedly uncommon.

The reverse of each panel shows entirely convincing and unimproved age: deep oxidation, old (inactive) worm to one panel, and evidence of earlier fixing consistent with period joinery. Both retain a rich, dark, waxed patina of considerable depth, with attractive rubbed highlights to the high relief revealing warm russet oak beneath.

Provenance: England. Early 17th-Century.

Material: Oak

Condition: Good original condition commensurate with age. Old stable splits and minor edge losses; historic inactive worm to the reverse of one panel. Rich untouched surface. The old dowls/pegs at the bottom of each panel can be easily removed for display purposes.

Dimensions: Each panel approximately 19¾ in wide × 7½ in high (50 cm × 19 cm)
