A most attractive and well-preserved George II walnut tea caddy of characteristic mid-18th century form, the domed lid enclosing two original lidded compartments, each with a turned wooden knob handle.

The exterior is veneered throughout in superbly figured walnut, displaying exceptional warmth and depth. The body is of rectangular form.

The front is fitted with an original cast Rococo escutcheon in silver-plated brass of foliate design, retaining good detail and patina. The reverse retains its original brass hinges. The interior compartments, formerly lined in lead or foil as was customary, are now unlined, the pine secondary wood showing honest age-related wear commensurate with circa 300 years of use. The lid interior retains its original walnut panel.

A highly decorative and functional antique of genuine age and quality, suitable for display or continued use.

Provenance: England. 18th Century, circa 1740-1760.

Material: Burr walnut veneer upon a deal (pine) carcass.

Condition: Good antique condition commensurate with age. Some veneer wear and minor edge losses. Original escutcheon and hinges. Interior compartment lids are present and functioning. The key is missing.

Dimensions: 23 cm wide × 15.5 cm high × 11.5 cm deep
