A Diminutive Early 17th Century English Antique Oak Six-Plank Child’s Chest or Coffer

 

 

A charming early 17thC English antique oak coffer of small proportions. Most probably made for a child given its size.

Six plank construction with 'V" cut end boards.

With a plank top with chip-carved decoration to the outer edges over a boarded front. The front, scratch-carved with simple linear decoration and the same repetitive chip-carved to the outer edges (the backboard is also decorated with the same chip carving), has its original lock plate. The top lifts to reveal an interior void of any fittings.

Condition - The hasp is missing. The hinges have been replaced historically and the lid has been strengthened to the underside with the addition of two iron braces. There is age-related wear to the stile feet of the end boards. One foot has a charming, if not naive, historic repair (see image 3) and the coffer still stands level and is stable. There are some minor traces of old non-active worm. The worm has long since gone but has also been treated as a precautionary measure. All the joints are sound and the coffer is ready to go.
