A wonderfully characterful late 19th‑century majolica tobacco jar by Höganäs Keramikfabrik, Sweden, modelled as the head of a bulldog. The piece carries the impressed factory mark — HOGANAS — together with the pattern number 426, confirming its origin within the celebrated Höganäs range of figural ceramics.
The bulldog’s features are boldly modelled, with the humorous, slightly grumpy expression that makes these Scandinavian novelty jars so appealing. The glaze has developed an attractive surface character over time, and the sculptural form retains a strong decorative presence. Originally intended for loose tobacco, it now stands as a delightful piece of late 19th‑century ceramic folk art.
The Origins of Höganäs Ceramics 1832-1926
Höganäs, now famous for its ceramics, began life over two centuries ago as a tiny fishing village in north‑west Skåne with no pottery tradition at all. Its transformation started in the late 1700s when coal deposits were discovered, attracting outside investment, engineers, and skilled workers. Alongside the mining, clay found in the seams led to the development of brickmaking and, by 1832, the first earthenware production.
From the outset, Höganäs ceramics were shaped by imported expertise and international influence. English mining engineers introduced technology and even early town planning, while potters from other Swedish towns — and later Germany and Denmark — brought the skills needed to establish a modern pottery. Early designs drew heavily on English flintware and salt‑glazed stoneware, and the factory quickly expanded into a wide range of household goods.
Throughout the 19th century, a succession of forward‑thinking managers and designers modernised the works. They introduced new glazes, catalogued designs, improved kiln technology, and embraced contemporary European styles — from Arts & Crafts influences to Danish decorative art. By the early 20th century, Höganäs had become known for its colourful majolica, sculptural forms, and practical yet artistically ambitious domestic ware.
The story of Höganäs is one of industrial innovation, imported ideas, and evolving design, turning a remote coastal village into one of Scandinavia’s most important ceramic centres.
This is a charming and expressive example of Höganäs figural ware, full of personality and warmth.
