A Carved, 17th–18th Century Spanish Baroque Antique Polychrome and Parcel-Gilt Angel's Head with Wings

A fine and characterful fragment of Spanish Baroque ecclesiastical carving, depicting a winged angel's head — an angelote or cabeza de ángel — of a type widely produced in Spain and her territories during the 17th and 18th centuries for retablos, altarpieces, choir stalls, and processional furniture.
The cherubic face is modelled with considerable expressiveness, the lips parted, and the eyes cast upward in a devotional gaze entirely typical of the Spanish Baroque sensibility. The head emerges from a boldly carved pair of outspread wings, the feathers rendered with vigorous, deeply undercut chisel work.
Retaining traces of its original polychrome — flesh tones to the face with remnants of red to the lips — together with vestiges of gilding to the wings, the piece displays the warm, layered surface that only centuries of age and handling can produce. The reverse, visible in our photographs, shows the raw timber with extensive worm channels consistent with great antiquity, confirming this as a genuine period carving rather than a later reproduction.
Fragments of this quality, separated from their original architectural settings during the upheavals of the Napoleonic Wars or the later Spanish church suppressions of the 19th century, have long been prized by collectors of religious folk art and Baroque decorative carving across Europe and America. Displayed on a shelf, console, or mounted on the wall, this piece carries with it the devotional intensity and extraordinary craft of the Spanish Golden Age workshops.
Provenance: Spain. 17th-18th Century Baroque.
Material: Carved wood (most probably pine) with decorative polychrome and gilding.
Condition: This piece displays wear entirely consistent with its age and former ecclesiastical use. The polychrome paint layer shows general losses and abrasion throughout, most notably to the face, where the flesh tones have partially lifted, though remnants of the original red pigment survive on the lips. Traces of gilding remain to the wings, now considerably worn and patchy. The carved wood beneath is sound and stable. The reverse displays extensive woodworm channels across the timber, now long inactive, providing compelling evidence of genuine antiquity. Some structural losses to the extremities of the wings. No restoration apparent. Overall, an honest, unrestored surface of considerable age and character.
Dimensions: Height 14 cm × Width 28 cm × Depth 8.5 cm (5½ × 11 × 3⅓ in)
