A luminous early 19th-century Greek School icon depicting Christ the Vine, rendered in the Byzantine tradition with oil and gilt on panel. Rooted in the Gospel of John (“Ἐγώ εἰμι ἡ ἄμπελος” – I am the vine), this sacred composition presents thirteen New Testament figures, with Christ enthroned at the centre of a stylised tree, surrounded by apostles in symmetrical harmony.
The gold ground and richly coloured robes evoke the spiritual radiance of Orthodox iconography, while the branching structure symbolises divine connection and ecclesiastical lineage. A devotional piece of theological depth and visual clarity.
Provenance: Greece. Early 19th-Century. Byzantine school.
Medium: Oil and gilt gesso on wood panel. Mounted with an a 19th-Century ebonised wooden frame with a gilt inner slip.
Condition: Minor specks of paint loss; generally good and stable
