This hand‑forged Welsh rushlight is a classic example of 19th‑century rural lighting, made to hold a thin rush dipped in tallow. The jaws are forged and joined by a single rivet, allowing the rush to be gripped securely, while the U-shaped arm with conical candleholder and upright stem give the piece its characteristic silhouette. The tripod base is neatly forged, providing stability on uneven cottage tables and hearthstones.
The surface carries a deep, honest patina from long use, with the irregularities and hammer marks typical of vernacular ironwork. The jaws open and close well, and the piece stands firmly. Rushlights of this type were once everyday objects in Welsh and border‑county homes, but good, untouched examples with original surfaces are now increasingly scarce.
A strong and atmospheric piece of Welsh folk metalwork, full of character and a tangible link to domestic life before the widespread use of candles and oil lamps.
