19th Century Russian Orthodox Antique Feast‑Day Icon – Twelve Great Liturgical Feasts

A beautifully painted Russian feast‑day icon, dating to the late 19th century, depicting the Twelve Great Liturgical Feasts of the Orthodox year. Executed in tempera on gesso‑prepared wood (also known as Levkas), the icon is arranged in a traditional compartmentalised format, each panel illustrating a major moment in the life of Christ and the Virgin.
The scenes include the Nativity of the Virgin, Presentation at the Temple, Annunciation, Nativity of Christ, Baptism in the Jordan, Entry into Jerusalem, Resurrection, Dormition of the Mother of God, and other central episodes of the Orthodox calendar. The palette is vivid and characteristically Russian, with strong reds, greens, and ochres set against gilded backgrounds and framed by a decorative border stamped with circular motifs.
This type of icon was intended for private devotion or for use in a domestic icon corner, offering the owner a complete cycle of the most important feasts at a glance. The painting retains its charm and legibility, with expected age‑related wear that enhances its authenticity and devotional presence.
