A charming, yet naive, 19th-Century oil on board, depicting a cellarhand in a wine cellar, looking a little worst for wear!
Despite the naivity, there is a lot of detail within this painting. The figure is depicted wearing period attire, and holding a ceramic jug, surrounded by wine bottles and a wicker basket, a large wine barrel marked "XXX". The cellar is illuminated by a candle set within a wrought iron hanging holder.
Presented in an associated gilt-gesso frame.
Provenance - Acquired directly from a private Norfolk-based collection. We understand that the painting was previously purchased a few years prior at auction.
