A characterful early garden figure with real charm and age, standing approximately 60cm tall. This rare 19th‑century German terracotta garden gnome is a wonderfully characterful survivor from the early era of European garden statuary.

The history of 19th-century terracotta gnomes is deeply rooted in folklore and European craftsmanship. The story begins in the forests and folklore of Germany. In the 16th century, Swiss alchemist Paracelsus described gnomes as earth elementals—mythical beings who guarded treasures underground and nurtured the soil.

These diminutive figures, with their pointed hats and bushy beards, symbolise earth spirits guarding treasures underground and are believed to bring good luck and ward off evil spirits.

By the 1840s, potter Philipp Griebel of Gräfenroda, Thuringia, crafted the first terracotta garden gnomes. Inspired by local dwarf legends, he designed bearded men with shovels, lanterns, and wheelbarrows—symbols of protection and good fortune for gardeners. Fellow maker August Heissner soon followed, and their creations quickly spread across Germany.

These figures combined traditional folklore with Victorian gardening culture, embodying both whimsy and protection. The culture of Thuringia at the time was rich with fairy tales and a deep connection to the natural world, inspiring the creation of these charming figures.

The first mass-produced gnomes linked to English garden landscapes were displayed in 1847 by Sir Charles Isham, bringing these figures to the British Isles from Germany, to his home at Lamport Hall, Northamptonshire. The legacy of these 19th-century German terracotta gnomes continues to bloom, reminding us of the enchantment found in simple, bearded figures that embody both tradition and playfulness.

Hand‑modelled in fired terracotta, this example carries all the hallmarks of the period: expressive features, a traditional pointed cap, and the warm, earthy surface tones typical of 19th‑century German kiln work. Pieces of this age and material seldom appear on the market, making him a delightful addition for collectors of early garden ornaments or those seeking a single, whimsical accent for a cottage garden, conservatory, or interior display.
