19th-Century English Antique Salt-Glazed Stoneware Lion's Head Fountain Mask, circa 1820-1880

A handsome and characterful press-moulded stoneware lion's head fountain mask, covered throughout in the rich, mottled treacle-brown and ochre salt glaze that is the hallmark of the great Midlands stoneware potteries — most likely Brampton of Chesterfield or the Denby kilns of Derbyshire. The lion is modelled with considerable vigour and confidence, the mane rendered in bold, deeply impressed locks, framing a powerfully expressive face with wide-set eyes and open jaws, the whole mounted on a rectangular tablet with shaped, undulating borders.

A central bore through the mouth accepted the water pipe, whilst a large conical recess to the reverse allowed the mask to sit flush against a wall over the supply pipe. Four original fixing holes to the corners secured the piece in position. As the accompanying photograph demonstrates, the mask remains in full working order. It continues to function as a fountain spout to this day — a remarkably pleasing testament to the quality and durability of Victorian stoneware manufacture.

The glaze is in excellent condition throughout, retaining the characteristic lustrous depth and warm tonal variation of the best Brampton and Denby wares. The modelling is of a quality consistent with a professional pottery producing architectural and garden ceramics for the high Victorian market, and comparable examples are held in museum collections of English ceramics.

An exceptionally decorative and fully functional antique garden piece, equally at home in a period walled garden, a stone-flagged courtyard, or displayed as a sculptural object in its own right.

Condition: Very good antique condition with expected age‑related wear. No structural issues. The salt glaze shows natural variations, minor firing irregularities, and small surface marks consistent with 19th‑century production and outdoor use. A stable, characterful example.
