A rare and historically significant 19th-century English leather shot carrier, bearing the heraldic crest and motto of the Beaufort family, Dukes of Beaufort — one of Britain’s most distinguished noble lineages.

Crafted from thick hide with a rich patina and stitched and part-riveted together into a classic ovoid form, the flask features the motto “Amez Verite” (Love Truth) beneath a detailed armorial crest. This inscription and emblem are directly associated with the House of Beaufort, whose ancestry traces to John of Gaunt and the Plantagenet line. The presence of this armorial suggests the flask was either commissioned for or presented to a member of the Beaufort household, possibly for ceremonial or sporting use.

Appended to the belt, aristocratic sportsmen commonly used such carriers at shooting events during the Victorian period, blending utilitarian function with noble symbolism. The crest elevates it from field gear to a collectable of heraldic interest.

Provenance: 19th century. England. Found in Norfolk.

Condition: Please refer to the images. There is surface wear commensurate with age. The leather belt strap verso has worn through and is no longer useable.

Historical Context

The Dukes of Beaufort, seated at Badminton House in Gloucestershire, have long held military and ceremonial roles in British history. Their motto Amez Verite reflects the chivalric ideals of truth and honour. Items bearing this crest are rare outside of estate holdings, making this carrier a unique survivor of aristocratic field culture.
