A good example of Victorian domestic pressed glass, this candlestick is formed in pale green soda-lime glass with characteristic bubble inclusions throughout the metal.

In traditional glassmaking and glassblowing industries, artisans and manufacturers frequently refer to molten or workable glass as "metal".

The form is traditional: a domed spreading circular foot with a cylindrical stem articulated by two rings, and a flared drip-pan socket.

The pale aquamarine tint derives from iron content in the batch, typical of the everyday domestic wares produced by the major Midlands and North East glasshouses of the period — Sowerby, Greener, and Davidson among them — though without a maker's mark precise attribution is not possible.

Pressed glass candlesticks of this form were produced in considerable quantity for the Victorian domestic market, yet single surviving examples in good condition are commonplace whilst matched pairs are notably scarcer. A pleasing and genuinely useful antique object.

Provenance: English, mid-19th-Century, probably Midlands or Tyneside.

Material: Soda glass.

Condition: Good. No chips, cracks or repairs. Minor wax residue to socket. Surface texture and bubble inclusions inherent to the glass.

Dimensions: 20 cm (8 inches)
