A very fine 19th‑century iron cellar candleholder, featuring two deep cylindrical sconces mounted on a vertical iron backplate with its original hanging loop. Hand‑forged and richly patinated, this is a superb example of utilitarian ironwork made for practical, everyday use in the darker recesses of Victorian homes — cellars, storerooms, and outbuildings.
The twin sconces are formed from rolled iron sheet, riveted securely to the upright spine, with a shaped footplate below for stability when placed on a surface. The iron has developed a wonderfully dry, honest surface from decades of use and atmospheric ageing, with the subtle pitting and oxidation you expect from genuine 19th‑century metalware.
These cellar candleholders were essential before the advent of electric lighting, providing a reliable and portable source of illumination in spaces where lanterns were impractical. Surviving examples with two sconces are notably scarcer, and this one has excellent presence, proportion, and authenticity.
A strong decorative piece for interiors with a rustic, industrial, or early‑domestic aesthetic — and a fine addition to any collection of antique ironwork.
