A rare and characterful carved wooden ship's figurehead depicting Vice-Admiral Horatio Lord Nelson, the hero of Trafalgar, rendered as a half-figure with the elongated tapered lower body and carved scroll terminal characteristic of original bow mounting. The figure is carved substantially in the round to the front and worked flat to the reverse, entirely consistent with original maritime use rather than decorative production.
The identification of the subject is unambiguous. Nelson wears his bicorne hat in the en bataille position — fore-and-aft across the head — as he habitually did throughout his naval career, and as he wore it on the quarterdeck of HMS Victory at the Battle of Trafalgar on 21st October 1805. His full-dress naval coat is rendered with considerable care: the dark navy ground is enriched with carved and gilded frogging, buttons arranged in pairs down the front, and epaulettes to both shoulders. Most tellingly, the star of the Order of the Bath is prominently carved and gilded to the left breast — the distinguishing badge that Nelson wore in life and by which his portraits are universally recognised. The right arm, carved close to the body, references his amputation at the elbow sustained during the assault on Santa Cruz de Tenerife in 1797. The reverse of the figure shows a single hand resting at the lower back, the figure's clasped posture conveying the composed, forward-facing resolution of the admiral at sea.
The face is sensitively carved with strong individual character: wide-set painted blue eyes beneath arched brows, a straight nose, and a closed mouth with the faintest suggestion of a smile — giving the figure a calm, slightly distant authority entirely befitting its subject. The hair is rendered in the powdered queue style of the period, carved in neat horizontal ridges and painted cream-white. The polychrome decoration throughout — flesh tones to the face and hands, black and gold to the hat and coat, gilded detail to the frogging, star, and scroll terminal — retains considerable original paint with honest age-related wear and minor losses consistent with a life at sea.
The scroll and acanthus terminal to the base is gilded and well-defined, confirming the figure's purpose as a mounted bow carving. The overall form — compact, robustly carved, designed to project forwards and downwards from a vessel's prow — is typical of smaller naval or merchant vessels of the mid-19th century. In the decades following Trafalgar, Nelson became by far the most popular subject for British ship's figureheads, and survivals of this quality and iconographic completeness are uncommon.
An outstanding piece of British maritime folk art and naval commemorative carving, with immediate display presence.
Provenance: England, circa 1820-1860. Acquired in Cornwall.

A small metal hanging ring is present to the reverse.
