19th Century Antique Brass Hand Lamp - Possibly A Former Ships Binnacle Lamp
A 19th-century antique brass hand Lamp.
This form of Lamp is also referred to as a "binnacle lamp" and may have been used to illuminate a ships binnacle at night time. A binnacle is the housing used to protect a ships compass.
With a sturdy turned wooden handle and shaped, hinged supports which flank the flue, an elongated-cylindrical body with a single door with a glass lens, the door opens to reveal the original oil reservoir and ceramic burner. The lamp bears the engraved initial "B" at the base of the carry-handle hinge.
