A finely executed Victorian antiquarian heraldic watercolour depicting an armorial device on a lozenge-shaped cartouche set on a gules ground, enclosed within a laurel wreath tied with ribbon bows at the cardinal points.
The arms comprise a castle triple-towered, the field semé of fleurs-de-lis azure and crows sable — elements suggestive of a French or Anglo-French civic or familial association, the crows possibly a canting device on a surname derived from the Latin cornix or French corneille.
The lozenge format indicates either a female bearer or a corporate armorial, copied here from an earlier heraldic source by a competent Victorian draughtsman — likely a herald painter, genealogical clerk, or gentleman antiquary (the painting bears no visible signature). The treatment of the laurel wreath and the confident, if slightly informal, rendering of the charge are characteristic of the mid-to-late 19th-century antiquarian revival of interest in English and Continental heraldry.
Provenance: Anglo-French. Mid-to-late 19th Century.
Material: Watercolour on paper. Presented within a cream, albeit discoloured, slip. Set behind glass with a moulded oak frame.
Condition: Please refer to the images, which confirm the condition.
Dimensions: 33.5 cm × 31 cm (13.19 in x 12.20 in) including the frame.
