A handsome and well-proportioned hanging corner cupboard of the late Georgian period, made in oak with the sober confidence of the best provincial joinery.
The deep, boldly stepped cornice projects over a plain frieze. Below it, canted stiles frame a single door set with a tall fielded panel. The panel rises to a shaped, arched head, the kind of quiet architectural flourish that lifts a country piece above the purely utilitarian. The door is secured by an iron lock behind a brass escutcheon. It opens on a shelved interior that keeps an old green painted finish, whose contrast with the warm oak exterior is one of the great pleasures of the type.
Corner cupboards of this kind held the household’s best china, glass and small valuables, hung high in the angle of the parlour or kitchen and locked against curious hands. Its proportions, and particularly its deep, stepped cornice, are consistent with Welsh and Border workmanship of the later eighteenth century.
The exterior has a rich, mellow patina built up over generations of polish and handling.
Provenance: Late 18th century. Most probably Welsh in origin.
Material: Oak with pine backboards.
Condition: Good, honest condition commensurate with age and domestic use. There are expected marks, minor shrinkage, and wear to the edges. Any old repairs or replacements to hinges or fittings would be in keeping with a piece of this age. It is sound and ready to hang, and full in-hand condition notes are available on request.
