A wonderfully honest 18th‑century Welsh oak armchair, full of the quiet authority and practical ingenuity that define rural Welsh furniture. Made in dense, dark, slow‑grown oak, the chair has a strong, upright stance with broad arms, a shaped cresting rail, and a single back panel with deep, time‑softened edges.
One of its most charming features is the original drawer beneath the seat — a classic Welsh regional detail that was historically used to store candles, papers, or small domestic items.
The single drawer no longer has its lock and is opened with an associated key, which serves as a drawer pull.
The seat shows an old split, stable and long‑settled, entirely consistent with age and use. Surfaces throughout display the rich, dry patina that only centuries of handling can produce. The colour is superb — deep, warm, and absolutely untouched by modern refinishing.
A strong, characterful Welsh armchair with all the right details: practical, sculptural, and deeply evocative of its regional origins.
