18th-Century Welsh Antique Iron Rushlight / Rushnip on Oak Base

A fine and characterful late 18th-century Welsh wrought iron rushnip (rushlight holder), a lovely example of primitive vernacular lighting.

The single pair of jaws, secured by a large rivet, is worked with a U-shaped arm and a counterweight terminating in a knop — the counterweight keeping the jaws sprung shut on the burning rush by gravity alone, a simple and ingenious solution from the country blacksmith's forge. The stem is twist-decorated, the smith taking evident pride in elevating a purely functional object, and is set into a pyramid-shaped oak base of pleasing form and colour.

Before candles were affordable to ordinary households, the rushlight was the lighting of rural Britain: a peeled rush, soaked in kitchen fat or tallow, gripped at an angle in the iron jaws and burned for perhaps half an hour of soft light. Wales in particular sustained the tradition late into the 18th and even 19th centuries, and Welsh rushnips — with their distinctive regional blacksmithing flourishes such as the twisted stem seen here — are especially prized by collectors of primitive lighting and early ironwork.

At under 7 inches high, this is a table rushnip of intimate domestic scale, made to sit at the elbow beside needlework or a book. It displays beautifully alongside early oak, candlesticks and hearth ironwork. It remains a wonderfully evocative object to handle: the jaws still open and close exactly as the smith intended nearly 250 years ago.

Condition: As per the images, with oxidation to the iron and minor historic worm to the base, albeit long since gone. The knop to the counterweight has been replaced. The nip remains a functional piece of period lighting.
