This large hand-turned wooden dish comes from the Swat Valley in northern Pakistan. It was made in the twentieth century, deliberately in the manner of an eighteenth-century turned dish.
It is of broad, shallow form with a gently rounded rim and a plain band below, the exterior and interior incised with fine turned lines. Its warm, mellow colour and softly worn surface give it the look and feel of a much older piece.
The Swat Valley has a long and distinguished woodworking tradition, rooted in the region’s abundant cedar and hardwood forests. Its turners and carvers have supplied everything from architectural carving to the humblest domestic utensils. Swati turners became particularly adept at reproducing the forms of earlier turned treen, and dishes such as this are now widely found in Western interiors. This example was made to evoke an earlier dish and should be enjoyed as a decorative piece in that spirit, rather than as a period antique.
At 17 inches across, it has real presence. It would make an excellent fruit bowl or centrepiece for a kitchen or dining table, or a handsome display dish on a dresser.
Provenance: Swat Valley, Pakistan. 20th-century made, in the 18th-century manner.
Material: Turned hardwood.
Condition: Good. There is surface wear and age-type patination consistent with use. Please refer to the images.
