An 18th Century Scottish Antique Wrought Iron Peerman (Rushlight Holder)

A tapering, hand-forged iron stem worked with a spiral twist for grip, rising from a rectangular wood block base to a sprung pincer jaw — the curled terminal closing under its own tension to grip a "peer," a splinter of resinous bog-fir or wood burned in place of a candle, in exactly the manner this class of holder was made for. The sprung action confirms the piece as a true peerman rather than a plain fixed-hook rushlight holder, the old Northern English and Scots term for this device.
An old, even, russet-brown oxidised surface throughout, entirely consistent with age and long-standing use rather than an applied finish. The wood base is dark-stained/painted and shows genuine wear.
Provenance: Scotland. 18th Century.
Material: Iron with wood base.
Condition: Sound and stable, with an honest, undisturbed iron patina and no active rust bloom noted; the sprung pincer action is intact and working. The wood base shows wear consistent with age and use; please confirm in hand whether it is contemporary with the iron or a later associated fitting, as this affects both the description and the price.
