A deeply characterful 18th‑century child’s hedge chair, beautifully primitive in form and rich with the tactile wear of generations. Made in the traditional rural manner, the chair combines a slab seat, splayed legs, and an irregular stick‑back arrangement that speaks directly to its hand‑made origins. The asymmetry of the arms — one short and single‑supported, the other longer with angled spindles — is entirely typical of vernacular chairmaking, where function and available timber dictated form.
The back is crowned with a curved cresting rail, and here the chair tells its most evocative story: one corner of the rail has been worn right through by centuries of small hands gripping the same spot. This is the kind of historic wear that cannot be faked — a physical memory of use, touch, and daily life. It is a rare and beautiful survival.
The surface throughout is dry, honest, and untouched, with the deep patina that only age and handling can produce. The chair stands firmly and remains entirely sound, its irregularities and tool marks celebrating the rural craftsmanship of its maker.
A superb example of early vernacular seating, perfect for collectors of primitive furniture, folk art, or those who appreciate the quiet poetry of genuine age.
Provenance: Ireland. 18th-century.
“Hedge chairs” — a term used for the most rustic forms of stick‑back seating — were made across Ireland, Wales, and the English Borders from the 17th to 19th centuries. Typically produced by farmers, not trained joiners, they were:
Built from whatever timber was available
Assembled with simple tools
Designed for durability rather than refinement
Often asymmetrical or irregular
Used in cottages, dairies, and farm kitchens
Child‑sized examples are significantly rarer, as they were used hard and seldom survived. Those with genuine, structural wear from handling, like the worn‑through cresting rail on this piece, are especially prized.
Material: Various indigenous timbers.
Condition: All joints are tight/sound. The worn corner spindle has become "iron-like" in strength through time. Wonderful surface patina. Please refer to the images.
