18th Century Antique Oak-Effect Scumbled Pine Alms Box / Offertory Box / Poor Box / Mite Box
An early 18th-Century antique pine alms / offertory box with a scumbled paint-effect finish to resemble oak.
A poor box, alms box, offertory box, or mite box is a box that is used to collect coins for charitable purposes. They are found in most Christian churches built before the 19th century and were the main source of funds for poor relief.
With a heavy iron hinged lid with two coin slots, the front having an edge moulded panel with an applied cross, pierced with keyhole.
The lid opens to reveal an interior void of any fittings.
Provenance - Originally consigned for auction as part of the Hines Collection, Wilkinsons, December 2022 (bearing the Hines collection label), subsequently purchased by the collector Alex Wilson.
Condition - Good overall as per the images. Surface wear is commensurate with age. A further detailed condition report is available upon request.
