18th Century Italian Life-Size Antique Carved Lime Wood Bust Of A Saint Januarius, Patron Saint of Naples
An 18th-century antique carved lime wood bust of a male Saint, thought to be a depiction of Saint Januarius (Italian - San Gennaro), Bishop of Benevento and Patron Saint of Naples.
Italian origin. Life-size.
Saint Januarius died around 305 AD in Pozzuoli, Italy. His feast day is 19th September annually. He is believed to have been martyred during the persecution under the Roman emperor Diocletian in 305.
The timber is covered in a thin layer of gesso with original over-paint/polychrome.
Condition - as per the images. There is minor age-related surface wear and losses to the paint and gesso layer. The carving displays very well. A further detailed condition report is available upon request.
