A tall and sculptural late 18th‑century Italian antique carved wooden pricket candlestick, standing on a three‑footed base with a boldly tiered and turned stem. The surface retains its beautifully distressed, time‑softened finish, with traces of original gilt gesso surviving only on the front‑facing side — entirely typical of Italian ecclesiastical prickets designed to be viewed from a single direction on an altar or devotional table.

The upper section retains its iron pricket spike, intended to secure a large taper or devotional candle. The stem is carved in a sequence of Baroque baluster, knop, and waisted forms, giving the piece a dramatic silhouette that reads beautifully in both period and contemporary interiors. The combination of worn gilding, exposed timber, and age‑opened cracks gives the candlestick a wonderfully authentic, church‑derived presence.

A superb example of rustic Italian antique lighting — architectural, atmospheric, and full of character.

Provenance: Italy. Late 18th century. Sourced by us from a private UK-based collection.

Pricket candlesticks — defined by their iron spike rather than a socket — were widely used across Italy from the 17th to the late 18th centuries, particularly in churches, chapels, and domestic oratories. Italian examples are often more sculptural and theatrical than their Northern European counterparts, reflecting the Baroque taste for movement, drama, and ornament.

Key features of Italian prickets include:

Gilt gesso applied only to the front, as they were positioned facing the congregation.

Tall, architectural stems with baluster and knop turnings.

Three‑footed bases for stability on stone or wooden altars.

Large pricket spikes for securing substantial devotional tapers.

Over centuries, the gilding and gesso wear away, leaving the beautifully layered, distressed surfaces that collectors now prize. These pieces sit comfortably in modern interiors as sculptural objects — part ecclesiastical history, part folk art, part architectural fragment.

Material: Carved limewood. Gilt-gesso to one side only.

Dimensions: Height 42 cm (16.5 in)

Condition: Beautifully distressed surface with age‑related wear, old paint and gesso losses, and natural cracking. Gilt gesso is intentionally present only on the front. Iron pricket secure. Stable and ready to display.

A richly worn and sculptural late‑18th‑century Italian Baroque pricket candlestick — its front‑facing gilding and centuries of patina give it a presence that transforms any interior.
