An elegant 18th‑century European School portrait of a lady, painted in oil on canvas and later laid down onto a wooden panel. The sitter is shown half‑length in a feigned oval, turned slightly in profile, her features rendered with the soft modelling and restrained palette typical of late‑Baroque and early‑Neoclassical portraiture.
The artist — presently unknown — captures a quiet dignity in the sitter’s expression, with delicate attention to the fall of light across the face and the subtle handling of flesh tones. The portrait is housed in a wooden gilt-gesso frame with a gilt inner-slip, whose worn gilding and age‑softened surface complement the work's period character.
A charming and atmospheric portrait with strong decorative presence, ideal for collectors of early European art or those seeking a refined focal point for a period interior.
Provenance: Sweden. 18th century. The frame bears a label verso - translated "To beloved Anders - Christmas 1987 - Fannor."
Material: Oil on canvas. Laid on to 20th wooden board. The associated period frame is wooden with plaster and gilt-gesso decoration.
Condition: Retouching, surface damage, and craquelure. Edges with losses and wear. Stable and ready to hang.
