They don't come much rarer than this!
A characterful 18th‑century English wrought‑iron cellar candlestick, complete with its original single candleholder and the distinctive “save‑all” — the ingenious pronged device designed to grip and burn the final remnants of a candle. These practical, workaday pieces were essential in storerooms, cellars, and outbuildings, where every scrap of tallow or wax mattered.
This example is forged with the honest, utilitarian strength typical of rural English ironwork: a broad circular drip pan base, a riveted handle and spike, and a well‑formed candle socket, accompanied by the four‑pronged save‑all rising alongside it. The surface has been painted at some point with later black paint, and the spike has been covered with gold paint. No doubt done to cover centuries of handling and atmospheric wear and to extend the economic life of the piece. The paint could be removed if need be.
A superb piece of early domestic lighting, full of authenticity and charm — perfect for collectors of vernacular metalwork, period interiors, or as a sculptural decorative object in its own right.
Provenance: England. 18th century. Acquired directly from a collection of English domestic metalwork in Japan.
Material: Wrought iron.
Condition: Please refer to the images. Good overall. Painted, as mentioned, which could be removed.
Dimensions: Length 34 cm (13.4 inches)
