Bosun's persuaders were used to discipline sailors who were deemed lazy or insubordinate, or to help press gangs gather new recruits.
This 18th-Century English example is turned from one piece of wood (possibly lignum vitae) and comprises a drilled aperture to the tip and side of the handle (a strap would have once been placed in there), flared stem and turned elongated tip.
The timber is heavy and whilst not loaded internally, we are sure that if you were knocked over the head by it, you would definitely feel it!
