A handsome English pewter chalice of the 18th century, of robust sacramental form and retaining a fine dark patina earned through long use. The deep, bucket-shaped bowl rises to a gently flared rim and sits above a knopped stem, the whole raised upon a broad circular spreading foot that lends the vessel its grave, architectural presence.
Chalices of this pattern belong to the tradition of English Communion pewter, the metal of choice for the humbler parish church and, above all, for the Nonconformist and Dissenting chapels — Baptist, Independent and Presbyterian — where the cost of silver lay beyond the reach of the congregation. Pewter served the same liturgical purpose with quiet dignity, and vessels such as this would have been brought out for the administration of the Lord's Supper. The generous capacity of the bowl is consistent with communal use; the cup passed from hand to hand among the gathered faithful.
The surface bears the honest scratches, pitting and mellow oxidation of two and a half centuries of service — wear that speaks directly to the object's devotional history and in no way diminishes its appeal. A piece of genuine ecclesiastical interest and pleasing sculptural weight.
