A charming and rare 18th-century rushlight holder, combining hand-forged wrought iron jaws united by a single rivet, a plain stem, and an arm of "U" shape terminating with a single conical rolled candle socket.
The jaws are designed to grip a rushlight or thin taper, allowing the angle to be adjusted as the light burned down. The jaws retain their original tension. With good age, surface patina, and old pitting consistent with genuine period use.
The base is well-turned in fruitwood, with a generous bulbous form and foot to provide stability — a typical feature of country-made lighting devices from this period. Rushlights of this kind were an affordable and widely used form of domestic lighting in rural households before the wider availability of candles, made from rushes dipped in animal fat.
A good characterful example of early vernacular lighting, displaying well as a piece of folk art or as part of a collection of early ironwork and treen.
