This authentic Georgian tinder lighter represents the ingenuity of 18th‑century England, crafted in the form of a miniature flintlock pistol. Bearing the maker’s name “Bryan & Son,” it offers rare provenance and a direct link to the tradition of English gunmakers.

Used to ignite tinder for rushlights, candles, and hearth fires, these lighters were essential household tools before the advent of matches. The flintlock mechanism mirrors contemporary firearms, combining practical utility with decorative appeal.

Collectors of antique arms & armour, tobacciana, and Georgian domestic artefacts will value this piece for its craftsmanship, rarity, and historical significance. A museum‑quality object, ideal for display in collections of English antiques, lighting devices, or early fire‑making tools.

Provenance - Ex-private collection, Yorkshire.

We have found one record relating to Bryan & Son. An entry in the City of Hull archives:

11 Nov 1709 Timothy Marshall Apprenticeship agreement between John Bryan, son of John Bryan, yeoman of Gilberdike in the parish of Eastrington and Timothy Marshall, gunsmith of Kingston upon Hull, for a term of 7 years.

We can only assume that Bryan established his business as a gunsmith upon completion of his apprenticeship.
