This tile is a fine example of mid-18th-century Dutch devotional ceramics, likely produced in Rotterdam circa 1740. The subject—Flagellation of Christ—is rendered with architectural depth and classical Roman attire, reflecting the stylistic evolution of religious Delftware during this period. Such tiles were often commissioned for domestic chapels or devotional niches, serving both decorative and catechetical functions.
Collectors of Christian iconography, Dutch ceramics, and European devotional art will appreciate the tile’s emotive composition, crisp cobalt palette, and hand-painted individuality. Its survival with only minor edge wear enhances its authenticity and appeal.
Historical Background of Delft Tiles (18th Century Focus):
Delft tiles emerged in the Netherlands during the late 16th century, reaching artistic maturity in the 17th and 18th centuries. By the 1700s, production had expanded beyond Delft to cities like Rotterdam, where workshops specialized in religious and narrative scenes rendered in cobalt blue on tin-glazed earthenware.
These tiles served both decorative and devotional purposes, adorning hearths, chapels, and domestic interiors. Biblical scenes—especially those from the Passion of Christ—were popular, offering visual catechism in homes and institutions. The Flagellation motif, with its Roman figures and architectural framing, reflects the 18th-century shift toward theatrical composition and emotional resonance.
Corner motifs, such as rosettes or ox-heads, helped standardize design while allowing artisans to focus on central storytelling. Though mass production increased, many tiles retained hand-painted individuality, making each a unique artifact of Dutch religious culture.
Today, antique Delft tiles are prized for their craftsmanship, iconography, and connection to European ceramic traditions.
