A compelling 18th‑century Dutch Delft blue‑and‑white tile, finely painted with the dramatic biblical moment in which Judith presents the severed head of Holofernes, accompanied by a single soldier before a tented encampment. The artist captures the tension of the scene with expressive linework, a strong circular reserve, and classic ox‑head corner motifs typical of Delft production of the period.
Executed in tin‑glazed earthenware, the tile retains excellent character. The cobalt palette remains bright, and the narrative is unusually clear — a desirable feature for collectors of Delft biblical tiles.
This subject, drawn from the Book of Judith, was a popular moral theme in the Netherlands, symbolising courage, virtue, and the triumph of the righteous over tyranny. Delft workshops frequently illustrated such stories for domestic interiors, hearth surrounds, and devotional settings.
A strong, decorative, and historically resonant tile — ideal for Delftware collectors, biblical art enthusiasts, or anyone seeking a piece of early Dutch ceramic storytelling.
Historical Context: Judith and Holofernes in Delftware
The story of Judith and Holofernes was widely depicted across European art from the Renaissance onward. In Delftware, the scene often appears in simplified form:
A tent indicating Holofernes’ military camp
Judith holding or presenting the severed head
A single soldier witnessing or reacting
A circular medallion composition with ox‑head corners
These tiles served both decorative and moralising functions, reinforcing themes of bravery, divine justice, and female virtue. Surviving examples with clear narrative detail, like this one, are increasingly sought after.
Provenance: Mid-18th century. Holland.
