18th-Century Antique Treen Dug-Out Bowl with Twin Handles

This hand‑carved late 18th‑century wooden dug-out bowl has a wonderfully honest, time‑worn surface, typical of rural domestic treen from northern Europe (most probably Sweden). The form is rectangular with softly rounded corners and two integral end handles, each shaped from the same block of timber. The interior shows the shallow, uneven tool marks of hand‑carving, while the exterior has developed a rich, varied patina from long use.
The wood has darkened beautifully with age, and the surface carries the small knocks, wear, and colour variations expected of a working bowl that once served in a farmhouse kitchen. A stable age‑related crack is visible on one handle, adding to the authenticity and character of the piece without affecting its integrity. Bowls of this type were used for kneading dough, preparing food, and general kitchen tasks, and today they make sculptural decorative objects with strong country‑house appeal.
A tactile and evocative example of vernacular 19th‑century treen, full of warmth and quiet presence.
