A characterful 18th-century continental alms box, crafted in wood and metal with a cylindrical form and circular lid. Traditionally used for charitable offerings in ecclesiastical or civic settings, this example evokes the quiet dignity of European public giving.

The carcass has been dug out and hewn from a single piece of timber. The external surface is decorated with metal embellishments and keep for the hasp. The lid, with a coin aperture, is made from sheet metal with a carry handle and hasp. The padlock is of a later date.

The box stands approximately 19 cm high with a diameter of 20 cm, and features some restoration with visible wear, dents, and age-related patina. Its utilitarian construction and modest proportions suggest use in a chapel, guild hall, or rural parish — likely outside England, possibly Central or Eastern Europe.

A tactile and evocative survivor, ideal for collectors of religious artifacts, social history, or early European metalwork and treen.

Provenance: 18th-century. Continental origin.

Condition: Surface wear is commensurate with age. Please refer to the images. The carry handle was painted silver historically. The hinge to the lid has been secured by way of later nuts, bolts, and washers. These are only evident internally.

Dimensions: Height 19 cm x Width 20 cm (7.5" x 7.9")
