A rare 17th-century Italian maiolica apothecary jar, used for storing wet drugs in a Baroque-era pharmacy. Its tin-glazed surface and bold decoration reflect the artistry of Italian ceramicists and the sophistication of early medical practice. For collectors of historic medical ware and decorative ceramics, this jar is a sculptural relic of healing and heritage.

The maiolica tradition flourished from the 15th to the 17th century. Italian potters transformed techniques they owed to the Islamic world into something entirely unprecedented, and in turn, laid the foundations for similar pottery traditions across Europe. Potters and pottery painters exploited the innovations of the Renaissance goldsmith, sculptor, and painter in what was a relatively humble medium, making highly decorative ceramics for both private and commercial use.

Decorated in underglaze blue and ochre, with a bulbous body, carry handle, and spout, all supported on a raised circular foot.

For collectors of historic medical ware and decorative ceramics, this jar is a sculptural relic of healing and heritage.

Historical Background:

Maiolica (or majolica) refers to tin-glazed earthenware developed in Italy during the Renaissance and Baroque periods, prized for its vivid decoration and glossy surface. Apothecary jars like this one were used to store medicinal preparations — in this case, wet drugs such as syrups, oils, or tinctures.

Produced in the 17th century, this jar reflects the intersection of art and science in early modern Italy. Pharmacies of the time were both medical and commercial spaces, and their vessels were designed to be both functional and visually impressive. The bold decoration and robust form of this jar suggest it was part of a well-appointed dispensary, possibly linked to a monastic or civic institution.

Surviving examples are rare, especially with intact glaze and legible decoration. They offer collectors and historians a tangible link to the practices and aesthetics of early European medicine.
