16th Century Italian Antique Carved Stone Memento Mori - Possibly a Gravestone Fragment
"Memento mori" is a Latin phrase meaning ‘remember you must die’. A basic memento mori sculpture or painting would be a portrait with a skull but other symbols commonly found are hourglasses or clocks, extinguished or guttering candles, fruit, and flowers.
Originating from Italy and 16th-century in date.
This stone fragment is carved in relief, with a skull. Below, the letters "PAX" (Latin for "Peace") are inscribed.
The carving may possibly be a gravestone fragment.
Presented on a modern metal stand.
