17th-Century English Antique Wrought Iron Adjustable Candle Holder

A 17th-Century English antique wrought iron rise-and-fall candlestand and rushlight holder.

The finial formed as flared and rolled candle socket over a plain shaft with a decorative rise-and-fall bracket below, held by an iron spring against the shaft under tension. The bracket has a nip with pivoted jaw, used to hold a taper, its counter balance formed as an additional candlesocket of identical form to the other.

Supported overall on a tripod base.

Provenance - Unknown.

Condition - As per the images. The sprung iron tensioner still has sufficient resistance to hold the taper and candle holder at any level up and down the shaft. This remains useable and displays very well. A further detailed condition report is available upon request.
