A stately 17th-century English antique oak wainscot armchair, carved with lozenge motifs and panelled in the traditional manner of the period. This chair exemplifies the robust elegance of early English joinery, with a commanding presence and rich patina.
The back features three vertical panels, the uppermost elongated and flanked by carved sides and a shaped top rail. The arms are flat and supported by baluster-turned front uprights and legs, and the seat is solid and framed by square legs to the rear. All legs are joined with stretchers. The oak is deeply patinated, with wear and surface character consistent with age and use.
This is a fine example of period seating — ideal for collectors of early oak furniture, English vernacular design, or those seeking a sculptural accent with historical gravitas.
Provenance: England. 17th century.
Condition - good overall as per the images. The seat board has been replaced historically, as one would expect for a chair of this age. The front supporting apron to the seat board has some bleaching. This can be easily rectified if the buyer wishes. The tips of the legs are worn. A further detailed condition report is available upon request.
Size: Back Height 109.5 cm (43") x seat height 47 cm (18 1/2") x outer-arm to outer-arm width 61.5 cm (24") x seat depth 40 cm (15 3/4" ) x overall chair depth including slightly sloping back 22" (56 cm).
